Viaggio a Caprarica (Lecce) per un giorno in compagnia delle classi 4^A, 4^B e 5^A, per immergerci in ambienti storici ricostruiti dall’età della pietra al medioevo, e a Lecce , per visitare la città e i suoi bellissimi monumenti.
One day School trip to Caprarica (Lecce) in company with the classes 4A, 4B and 5A, to immerse ourselves in historical environments remade from the Stone Age to the Middle Age, and to Lecce, to visit the town and its wonderful monuments.
Viaggio per visitare le dighe del Pertusillo, di Gannano e quella di Montecotugno, la più grande diga d’Europa in terra battuta, e per visitare il quartiere di origine turca di Tursi, un paesino poco distante da noi.
One day school trip to visit the Pertusillo , Gannano dams and Montecotugno one, the biggest dirt dam in Europe, and to visit the Turkish quarter in Tursi, a small town a little far from us.

Two days school trip to Rome, the most important one, to visit the monuments of the city ( the Colliseum, the Fori Imperiali, S. Pietro square with the superb Basilica, the Pantheon, Spagna square, the Trevi Fountain, Navona Square, The Vittoriano and some museums) and to Tivoli, to admire the lovely Villa d’Este.

Avremmo dovuto effettuare un altro viaggio a Potenza, per visitare il Consiglio regionale,a Melfi, per visitare il castello e la cattedrale, e a Monticchio, per visitare i laghetti e uno stabilimento di imbottigliamento dell’acqua minerale .Il brutto tempo però non ci ha consentito di farlo e, nostro malgrado, ci abbiamo dovuto rinunciare.
We’d had to do another trip to Potenza, to visit the Regional Council, to Melfi, to visit the castle and the cathedral, to Monticchio, to visit the little lakes and the factory for the bottling of the mineral water. But the bad weather didn’t allow us to do it and, unfortunately, we had to give up.

Where do your children go on day trips from school ? On Monday 13th July Class 4 had a trip to see a stadium preparing for the new Premier League soccer season.
Dove vanno i vostri bambini per le gite scolastiche di un giorno ? Lunedì 13 luglio la Classe 4 ha fatto una gita per vedere uno stadio che prepara per la nuova stagione di calcio della Premier League .
The stadium was built for the purpose of England staging the Commonwealth Games in 2002. The Commonwealth is a group of countries which used to be part of the British Empire . (Almost all those nations who speak English, for example : Canada , India , South Africa , Australia , Hong Kong , Pakistan , Jamaica , Kenya , New Zealand and many others)

Lo stadio fu costruito allo scopo di ospitare in Inghilterra i Giochi del Common wealth nel 2002. Il Commonwealth è un gruppo di paesi che facevano parte dell'Impero britannico. (Pressocché tutte quelle nazioni che parlano inglese, per esempio: Canada, India, Meridionale Africa Australia, Hong Kong, Pakistan Giamaica, Kenia la Nuova Zelanda e molti altri)
The stadium is interesting in that, at first, it had just 2 tiers of seating but when the Games were over they dug deep into the ground where the pitch is now so that a third tier of seats could also be added. The bottom third is therefore below ground level.
Lo stadio è interessante in ciò, inizialmente aveva solo 2 file di posti a sedere ma quando i Giochi finirono si scavò in fondo nel terreno dove ora è il campo così che anche una terza fila di posti potesse essere aggiunta . La terza (fila) più in basso è perciò sotto il livello del campo.

The Queen opened the Games in 2002 along with David Beckham and her leather chair is still in position. Some people feel that because the Manchester Games of 2002 were a success, it increased London ’s chances of being selected as the Olympics venue for 2012.
La Regina aprì i Giochi nel 2002 insieme a David Beckham e la sua sedia di cuoio è ancora in posizione. There are air vents high up in the stadium which allow air to circulate during the week to help dry the pitch ( Manchester is a rainy city) but these are closed during games so the fans are not too cold ! There is a road underneath the stadium which ambulances use as well as the away team bus so it can enter the basement of the stadium.

The stadium holds 48,000 fans – it is the fourth largest League ground in England . (only Manchester United, Arsenal and Sunderland are bigger) .

Sportcity is the name of this area of East Manchester where all the Games were held. The national squash and cycling centres are here and we visited the Velodrome where the British cycling team (including Chris Hoy) are based half of the year. Some of the team were arriving for training when we were there. In Sportcity there is also an athletics track and a tennis centre.

After the games, Manchester City F.C. reached an agreement to take over the stadium and leave their home in South Manchester where they had been for over 100 years. They are the only major English club to have been started by a woman – she believed the local men in the 1870’s needed something to occupy them to stop their habit of drinking and getting into trouble !

The exits are circular tubes, similar to the San Siro stadium in Milan , Italy . Our tour guide explained that this was because the ground can be emptied in 8 minutes in an emergency.

Regular fans are the boxer Ricky Hatton and Liam and Noel Gallagher of the band, Oasis. In our photographs you will see us outside one of the executive boxes where wealthy fans have a 4 course meal before matches, us sitting in the directors’ leather chairs and also by the side of the pitch.

National School Sport Week 2009 / Settimana Sportiva Scolastica Nazionale 2009

Churchfields Primary School made a concerted effort to participate in this Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week by carrying out the following activities, in addition to normal P.E. lessons.

La Scuola Primaria Churchfields ha fatto uno sforzo notevole per partecipare a questa Settimana Sportiva Scolastica Nazionale Lloyds TSB portando avanti le seguenti attività,in aggiunta alle normali lezioni di attività Motoria.

The Year 4’s were taken to Chesterton High School ’s Sports Centre for basketball and five-a-side football.

Later that day Year 5’s, in association with numerous schools in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent , took part in the Guinness Book of World Records attempt at skipping. There were two independent witnesses who joined us to sign that they had seen 12 of our children pass the specified amount of time required to continuously skip.

Il giorno dopo i bambini del 5° anno, insieme a numerose scuole dello staffordshire e di Stoke- on- Trent, hanno preso parte al tentativo del Guinness Book dei Record Mondiali per il salto con la corda. Year 5’s used the High School’s tennis courts to play various sets of mixed doubles which provided an added dimension to the skills they had been practising back at school.An inter-school rounders tournament took place at the High School. We also invited Friarswood Primary School to join us for an extra-curricular basketball game.

I bambini del 5°anno hanno usato il campo da tennis della scuola superiore per giocare vari set di doppio misto che hanno richiesto una maggiore dimensione alle competenze per cui si erano allenati a scuola. Un torneo di rounders inter-scolastico ha avuto luogo nella scuola superiore. Abbiamo anche invitato la Scuola Primaria Friarswood ad unirsi a noi per una partita di basket extracurriculare.

There was a lunchtime intra-school soccer competition which the ‘Yellow Tigers’ won.

There was aerobic activity for Year 3’s presented by former pupil Fay Braxton.

An inter-school swimming gala was organised by Sarah Jackson (Chesterton Primary) and Sarah Beech, attended by three schools.

Key stage One would be targeted the following week with the following sessions :

Il Key stage one ( il grado di base uno) avrebbe indirizzato la seguente settimana alle seguenti sessioni:

sessione di multi-abilità per i bambini del 2° anno
una sessione di danza per la strada per i bambini del 1° e del 2° anno
una nuotata di famiglia " mamme e bambini" per i bambini dell'anno dell'accoglienza.

The scheme definitely raised the profile of sport in our school and gave some children the opportunity to ‘try out’ some sports they might not normally be exposed to. There ought to be one more often !!

Il progetto ha senza alcun dubbio innalzato il profilo sportivo della nostra scuola e ha dato ad alcuni bambini l'opportunità di provare alcuni sport con cui normalmente non sarebbero potuti venire a contatto. Ce ne dovrebbero essere più spesso!!

Imparare divertendosi! / Learning having fun!

Anche nel corso di quest'anno la nostra scuola ha ospitato il "Theatrino ACLE" e i nostri alunni hanno avuto l'opportunità di assistere e di partecipare a rappresentazioni ad opera di attori madrelingua imparando, divertendosi, molto più Inglese che durante le normali lezioni scolastiche.

Also this year our school hosted the "Theatrino ACLE" and our students had the opportunity to see and participate in shows acted by native speaking actors learning, having fun, much more English then during the normal school lessons.

Come abbiamo già detto, non ci siamo limitati solo a ricercare giochi antichi, ma , dopo aver intervistato i nostri nonni e dopo aver raccolto e descritto molti giochi, abbiamo provato ad impararne ed a farne alcuni in palestra divertendoci un mondo. Il nostro maestro Mario ci ha guidati nell'esecuzione dei giochi, ci ha fotografato e filmato.

As we have just said, we didn't limited ourselves only in searching old games, but, after interviewed our grandparents and after collected and described many games, we tried to learn and to play some of them in the gym having a lot of fun. Our teacher Mario guided us in the carrying out of the games , photographed and filmed us.

Quante volte ci siamo sentiti dire dai nostri genitori o dai nostri nonni:” Ma che giochi fate, i nostri sì che erano giochi !”. Ora ci è venuto il desiderio di conoscere i loro giochi ed è per questo che abbiamo deciso di intervistare i nostri nonni per conoscere e riproporre a noi stessi il loro modo di trascorrere il tempo e il loro modo di divertirsi. Li abbiamo intervistati e ci siamo convinti che avevano ragione. Noi trascorriamo troppo tempo in solitudine davanti al televisore mentre loro stavano sempre in compagnia in mezzo alla strada, dalla mattina alla sera . Giocavano e si divertivano un mondo. I loro giochi erano coinvolgenti, spesso pericolosi, ma quasi sempre molto interessanti, da tutti i punti di vista, in quanto erano giochi che prevedevano fantasia, intelligenza,tattica, abilità, resistenza e persino creatività. Già, perché il più delle volte erano loro stessi che dovevano costruire i loro giocattoli, dal monopattino alla carrozza, dalla fionda all’arco con le frecce, dal pallone costruito con staccë al ruòllë, ecc. Noi abbiamo provato a rifare i loro giochi e abbiamo constatato che erano davvero bravi nell’eseguirli. Li abbiamo rifatti nelle nostra palestra, con il tappeto in gomma, con le scarpe da ginnastica ai piedi, con il materasso per attutire eventuali cadute, e tuttavia abbiamo incontrato molte difficoltà. Essi, invece, li eseguivano in mezzo alla strada selciata, con ai piedi pesanti scarponi, senza tuta e soprattutto senza materassino per attutire delle cadute che sicuramente ci sono state.
How many times we heard to say to us by our parents or our grandparents: “But what games you play, ours, certainly, were games!” Now the wish to know their games was born in ourselves and that’s why we decided to interview our grandparents to know and repropose to ourselves their way to spent the time and have fun. We interviewed them and convinced ourselves that they were right. We spent our time in loneliness opposite the television as they always stayed in company on the road , from the morning to the evening. They played and had a lot of fun. Their games were captivating , often dangerous, but quite always very interesting, from every point of view, as they were games that provided fantasy, intelligence, tactic, ability, resistance and even creativity, Yes, because the more of the times they had to make their toys for themselves, from the scooter to the carriage, from the catapult to the bow with the arrows, from the ball made with the “staccë”( flat stones) to the “ruòllë” (tumble), etc. We tried to replay their games and realized they were really good at playing them. We replayed them in our gym, with the gum carpet, with the trainers at our feet, with the mattress to cushion the falls, and all the same we had many difficulties. They, instead, played them on the paved street, with at their feet heavy boots, without track suit and moreover without mattress to cushion the falls that surely there have been.

“GÚNË SË MÓNDË” (Cavallina)-The horse / The Leapfrog

Era un gioco di abilità e di destrezza che prevedeva la partecipazione di 5 o 6 persone al massimo. Si faceva la conta e il “contato” fungeva da cavallina. Gli altri saltavano la cavallina recitando una filastrocca, posando contemporaneamente un oggetto sul dorso del cavallo e riprendendolo al passaggio successivo senza farlo cadere o accompagnando il salto con gesti quali: grattatina sul dorso, calcetto nel sedere e così via. Chi sbagliava sostituiva il compagno che fungeva da cavallina.

It was an ability and dexterity game that required the participation of 5 of 6 people at most. They did the counting and the “counted” acted as a horse. The others jumped the horse saying a chant, putting in the meantime an object on the back of horse and taking it at the next passage without letting it fall or accompanying the jump with gestures as :little scratching on the back, little kick on the bottom an so on . Who got wrong replaced the mate acted as a horse.

“ SËTTË CANZÌPPË”( Cavallina) - The horse / The Leapfrog

Era un gioco a cui partecipavano più giocatori. Era una variante della cavallina: il primo si metteva a dorso d’asino e gli altri saltavano e man mano ognuno di loro si metteva a sua volta a gobba d’asino e gli altri continuavano a saltare recitando una breve filastrocca.

It was a game in which more players were involved. It was a change of the “cavallina” ( leapfrog): the first acted at back of a donkey and the other ones jumped and little by little in his turn each one of them acted at the back of a donkey and the other ones continued to jump saying a little chant.

“SCÁRËCHË (Scarico) -Unloaded

Questo gioco prevedeva abilità,destrezza, resistenza fisica ed anche tattica.Si formavano due squadre da 3 o 4 componenti. Una squadra si poggiava su di un muro formando un ponte e l’altra doveva saltarci sopra .Compito della prima squadra era quello di dare meno spazio possibile alla seconda, di resistere fino a quando uno degli avversari non fosse scivolato da sopra o di dire “Scàrëchë” una volta che si fosse resa conta di non farcela a mantenere il peso degli avversari o che gli avversari erano ben posizionati su di loro.Il compito della seconda squadra invece era quello di posizionarsi bene sul dorso degli avversari e di resistere fino a quando uno dei giocatori della prima squadra non pronunciasse la parola “Scàrëchë”.Era importante stabilire tatticamente chi dovesse saltare per primo e chi per ultimo, e questo si decideva in base all’abilità e alla destrezza dei giocatori. Se si sbagliava si scambiava il ruolo con l’altra squadra.
This game required ability, dexterity , physical strength and also playing tactics.They formed two teams of 3 or 4 components. A team leaned against a wall forming as a bridge and the other one had to jump on there.Task of the first team was to give the less place possible to the second one, to resist till when one of the adversaries didn’t slide from up and to say “Scàrëchë”( Unload) once it realized to not be able to support the adversaries heavy or that the adversaries were well placed on them.Otherwise task of the second team was to place themselves well on the back of the adversaries and to resist till when one of the first team players didn’t say “Scàrëchë” (unload). Deciding tactically who had to jump firstly or lastly was important, and they decided that in order to the player’s ability and dexterity . If they got wrong they changed the role with the other team.

“MAŻŻË E PÌŻŻËCHË” (Mazza e Lippo)- Mallet and rung

Era un gioco a due. Gli attrezzi erano un bastone ( ‘a mażżë) ed uno più corto ben appuntito alle estremità ( u pìżżëchë). A turno i giocatori dovevano lanciare “u pìżżëchë” il più lontano possibile colpendolo su una punta e poi colpendolo mentre era in aria. Il vincitore aveva diritto alla “cudjǽtë” : Il vincitore effettuava un altro tiro, si posizionava sul punto raggiunto dal “pìżżëchë”, e aveva inizio una corsa: il vincitore correva a marcia indietro e il perdente lo doveva raggiungere e riportare a spalle al punto di partenza.
It was a game for two. The tools were a stick (‘a mażżë) and a shorter one well sharp at the ends( u pìżżëchë).At their turn the players had to launch the rung (“u pìżżëchë”) as far as they could hitting it on one end and then hitting again in the meantime it was in the air. The winner had the right to the “cudjǽtë”: the winner did another throwing, placed himself in the point reached by the “pìżżëchë” ( rung), and a running started : the winner run backwards and the loser had to reach him and carry him on his shoulders to the start point.

“U ŜCÁFFË” ( Lo schiaffo )-The Slap

Era un gioco che coinvolgeva più persone. Si faceva la conta e il contato si metteva “sotto” coprendosi il viso con una mano e tenendo l’altra sotto l’ascella con il palmo rivolto all’esterno. I compagni davano un forte schiaffo sulla sua mano e lui doveva indovinare chi lo aveva colpito. Se indovinava, questi prendeva il suo posto, altrimenti toccava ancora a lui stare “sotto”.It was a game that involved more people. They did a count and the counted put himself “ sotto” ( below) hiding his face with a hand and keeping the other one under his armpit with the palm towards outside. The mates gave him a strong slap on the hand and he had to guess who hit him. If he guessed , this one took his place, otherwise it was his turn to stay "sotto” (below) again.

“STACCË” (Le pietre piatte) -The flat stones

Il gioco prevedeva la partecipazione di 2 o più giocatori. Era un gioco simile al gioco delle bocce. La differenza consisteva esclusivamente nel fatto che al posto delle bocce si utilizzavano delle pietre piatte.

The game expected the participation of two or more people. It was a game similar to the bowls game. The difference consisted only in the fact the they used flat stones instead of bowls.

“ŻË MÓNËCHË”( Zio monaco) - Uncle monk

Il gioco prevedeva la partecipazione di 2 o più giocatori come per il gioco delle “staccë”. Si piazzava un barattolo, con sopra dei bottoni o delle monetine, alla distanza di alcuni metri. A turno si lanciavano delle pietre piatte con cui bisognava colpire il barattolo facendo cadere i bottoni o le monetine. Se questi oggetti cadevano vicino alla pietra, il giocatore se ne impossessava, altrimenti il gioco continuava fino al loro esaurimento.
The game expected the participation of 2 or more people just like for the “staccë” game. They placed a tin, with some buttons or some little coins above , at the distance of some meters . at their turn the
y threw some flat stones using which they had to hit the tin letting fall the buttons or the little coins. If these objects fell near the stones the player took possession of them, otherwise the game continued until they finished.

“TRÚŻŻË” (Batti Bottone) – Hit the button

Si giocava essenzialmente in due, raramente con più giocatori. Anche in questo gioco si utilizzavano i bottoni o delle monetine battendole contro una porta di legno e facendole rimbalzare sul selciato in modo da avvicinarsi il più possibile a quella dell’avversario. Se era abbastanza vicina da toccarla con il palmo della mano, il lanciatore se ne impossessava.
They played essentially in two, rarely with more players. Also in this game they used buttons or little coins hitting them against a wooden door and letting them bounce on the pavement in the way they went as more as possible to the adversary one. If it was quite close to touch it with hand palm, the launcher took possession of it.

“ ‘A MENAPÈTRË” (La fionda) – The catapult

Era un gioco molto comune e i ragazzi lo facevano mirando a un barattolo ma anche “cacciando” gli uccellini. In pratica i ragazzi si costruivano la fionda con una forcella di legno, con due elastici e un pezzo di cuoio e la utilizzavano per i loro giochi.
It was a very common game and the kids did it taking aim at a tin but also “hunting” birds. Practically the kids made for themselves a catapult with a wooden fork, with two elastics and a piece of leather and used it for their games.

“ ‘A MMÚCCË” (Nascondino) / Hide – and – seek

Questo gioco è rimasto invariato nel tempo. Un bambino si copriva gli occhi e contava mentre gli altri si nascondevano. Al segnale stabilito doveva scoprire i compagni fino all’ultimo. Se ci riusciva, il primo che aveva scoperto prendeva il suo posto, altrimenti toccava ancora a lui mettersi “sotto”.
This game remained unchanged during the time . A child covered his eyes and counted in the meantime the other ones hid themselves. At the fixed signal he had to seek the mates till the last one. If he could to do it , the first one he had found took his place, otherwise it was his turn to stay “sotto” (below) again.

“SACCË NA’ COSACUSELLË” ( Indovinelli) – Riddles

Era un gioco a cui partecipavano maschi e femmine. Si faceva all’interno delle abitazione e, quindi, soprattutto nelle giornate piovose. Era il classico indovinello che iniziava sempre così: Saccë na’ cosacusellë.
It was a game in which boys and girls participated. They played it inside the houses and, so, mostly in the rainy days. It was the classical riddle that always started in this way : Saccë na’cosacusellë ( I know a little thing).

“RËGGÌNË RËGGÌNÈLLË”(Regina reginella – Queen little queen

Anche questo gioco si faceva soprattutto all’interno delle abitazioni durante le giornate piovose e con la partecipazione di tutti i bambini presenti. Tutti i bambini si metteva in riga ad eccezione di una che era la reginella. A turno i bambini recitavano la filastrocca “ Regina reginella, quanti passi mi fai dare per arrivare al tuo castello con la fede e con l’anello?”. La regina rispondeva a suo piacimento facendo fare passi da formica, da leone, da cavallo, e così via , favorendo chi aveva deciso di far giungere per primo presso di lei e di prendere così il suo posto. A questo punto il gioco ricominciava da capo.
Also this game was played mostly inside the houses during the rainy days and with the participation of all those present. All the children placed themselves in row except that was the “ reginella” ( little queen). At their turn the children said a chant ”Queen little queen, how many steps you let me walk to arrive to your castle with the wedding ring and with the ring?”. The queen answered as she liked letting them walk ant , lion, horse, and so on, steps, favouring whom she had decided to let arrive first next to her and take so her place. At this point the game started again.

‘A CAMBǼNË – ( LA CAMPANA) - The bell / The hopscotch

Era un gioco essenzialmente femminile. Per terra si disegnava un grande rettangolo , sormontato da un semicerchio, suddiviso a sua volta in altri rettangoli più piccoli numerati. Il gioco consisteva nel saltellare su di una gamba da un rettangolo all’altro, lanciando una pietruzza volta per volta in ogni riquadro e riprendendola durante il percorso, facendoli tutti all’andata e al ritorno. Vinceva chi compiva tutto il percorso senza fare errori.
It was an essentially girls’ game. On the pavement they drew a big rectangle, surmounted by a semicircle, divided in its turn in other smaller numbered rectangles . The game consisted in hopping on one leg from a rectangle to the other, throwing a little stone little by little in each square and taking it again on the way, doing all the ones at the outward and at the return. Who did all the way without mistakes won.

U CÌRCHJË ( il cerchio) – The circle

Il gioco consisteva nel far rotolare un cerchio di ferro guidandolo con una bacchetta, anch’essa di ferro, che terminava con un uncino atto ad agganciare il cerchio.
The game consisted in rolling an iron circle guiding it with a stick, as well in iron, that ended with a hook suitable for coupling the circle.

“‘A MMÁVËCË” (l’altalena oscillante)- The swing

Era la classica altalena. Si legavano le estremità di due funi al ramo di un albero, di solito, e alle altre due estremità si legava una tavola su cui ci si sedeva. A turno si saliva sulla tavola mentre un compagno aveva il compito di spingere.
It was the classical swing. They tied up the ends of two ropes at a tree branch, usually, and at the other two ends they tied a board on which they sat . At their turn they went up the board as a mate had the task of pushing.

“’A PUPËTARÈLLË” (l’altalena a terra) / The seesaw

Era l’altalena “a terra”. Si posava un tronco per terra e di traverso una tavola alle cui estremità si sedevano i due ragazzi. Il gioco sfruttava il principio delle leve per equilibrare i pesi.
It was the seesaw “on the ground”. They put a trunk on the ground and sideways a board at which ends two kids sat down. The game used the lever principle to balance the weights .

“U JUDËCË” ( Il giudice) – The judge
Questo gioco si faceva soprattutto nel periodo invernale: primo, perché si utilizzava un osso ricavato dall’uccisione del maiale, secondo, perché serviva anche a riscaldarsi dal freddo invernale. Era un gioco virile, per cui prevedeva la partecipazione di soli maschi. A turno si lanciava l’osso del maiale a mo’ di dado e dalla posizione che assumeva per terra si assegnava il ruolo dei giocatori. Le posizione erano quattro: ciùccë, judëcë, màżżë e la neutra. Assegnati i ruoli, si lanciava l’osso a turno e, a secondo della posizione, il giudice comminava la sentenza che veniva eseguita dal mazziere utilizzando un fazzoletto attorcigliato.
This game was played mostly during winter time: firstly , because they used a bone made out from the pig killing, secondly, because it was useful to warm themselves from the winter cold. It was a male game, so it expected the participation of the only boys. At their turn they threw pig bone as a dice and from the position it assumed on the ground they assigned the players’ role. The position were four: “ciùccë” (donkey), “judëcë” ( judge), “màżżë” ( mace) and the neutral. Assigned the roles, they threw the bone at their turn and , in order to the position, the judge inflicted the judgment that was executed by the mace bearer with a twisted handkerchief.

“I LǼTRË” (Guardie e ladri) – Guards and robbers

In questo gioco fatto da un gruppo di ragazzi, il contato si copriva gli occhi mentre gli altri si nascondevano. Il contato, che fungeva da guardia, doveva scovare, rincorrere e arrestare gli altri, che fungevano da ladri.
In this game played by a group of kids , the counted hid his eyes in the meantime the other ones hid themselves. The counted , that acted as a guard, had to seek, chase and arrest the others, that acted as robbers.

“ A MÚRRË” (La morra) – The “morra”( from the Germany murre: twisted face)

Questo gioco ancora persiste nelle nostre campagne. Il confronto avviene tra due giocatori o tra due squadre e si tratta di indovinare il punteggio che si forma aprendo le dita della propria mano con le dita che apre l’avversario. Chi arrivava per primo alla meta stabilita vinceva. Anche qui il premio consisteva in una bevuta di vino ( fra gli adulti naturalmente).
This game still persists in our countries. The competition is between two players or two teams and guessing the score formed opening our own fingers with the fingers opened by the adversary is the purpose of the game. Who arrived first to the established aim won. Also here the prize was a wine drink( among the adults of course).

“ U RUÓLLË” (La ruzzola) – The Tumble

Si giocava a due squadre: consisteva nel lanciare, facendolo rotolare, un disco, “ u ruòllë”, di legno molto duro, lungo la strada per un percorso stabilito di andata e ritorno. Ovviamente vinceva chi arrivava per primo. I vincitori avevano diritto al premio che, generalmente, consisteva in una bottiglia di vino. Questo gioco aveva inizio di regola in una strada del paese chiamata “Via nova vecchia”, dove si trovava, e si trova tuttora, la cantina di “zì Vicienzë Gioia”.
They played with two teams: it consisted in throwing, letting it roll, “ u ruòllë” , a wooden very hard disk, along the street for an established toward and backward way. Obviously who arrived first won. The winners had the prize right that, usually, consisted in a bottle of wine( for adults !). This game usually started in a street of the town called ” Via nova vecchia”, where was , and still now is , the “zì Vicienzë Gioia” ‘s ( uncle Vincenzo Gioia) cellar.

Ovviamente c’erano tanti altri giochi, come il pallone, la bicicletta , il monopattino, la carrozza, le bambole, l’arco,la banda,ecc. ma la nostra attenzione si è focalizzata soprattutto su quelli descritti perché ci sono sembrati più originali o più curiosi.
Obviously there were many other games , just like football, bike, scooter, carriage , dolls, bow, band, etc. but we mostly focalize our attention on those ones we described because they looked us more original or funnier.

Children did a survey about old games an toys and we have some news about grandparents' memories of childhood games. Personally, ones which I remember were Hide and Seek, (kids go off to hide in the park while the 'catcher' counts to 100, then he chases after them and tries to spot them) cowboys and indians (pretend shooting each other) and a favourite girls' game was hopscotch. (sort of hopping onto paved stones on the pavement which had numbers written on them with chalk)

I bambini hanno fatto un'indagine sui giochi e i giocattoli antichi ed abbiamo qualche notizia sui ricordi dei nonni dei giochi dell'infanzia. Personalmente, quelli che io ricordo erano Nascondino( I ragazzi corrono a nascondersi nel parco mentre il "catturatore" conta fino a 100, poi li insegue e cerca di trovarli ), cowboy e indiani ( immaginano di spararsi l'un l'altro) un gioco preferito dalle ragazze era la campana( un certo saltellare su pietre lastricate sul marciapiede che avevano dei numeri scritti sopra con il gesso).

We noticed that there were lots of shops in your town as well we found out that your shops have a long break in the afternoon and open back up later on in the day. Your shops are different compared to ours because your shops close for the afternoon and ours don’t.

We want to tell you about means of transport in Francavilla. In our town there isn’t a train station or an airport, but you can use buses to go everywhere. All the families have got one or more cars and all we children have got ,at least, a bike to ride for all the streets of the town and in our "Villa Comunale Park" having a lot of fun.

Vogliamo parlarvi dei mezzi di trasporto a Fracavilla. Nel nostro paese non c'è una stazione ferroviaria o un aeroporto, ma si possono usare gli autobus per andare dappertutto. Tutte le famiglie hanno una o più macchine e tutti i bambini hanno, almeno, una bicicletta con cui andare per tutte le strade del paese e nella nostra "Villa Comunale" divertendosi un mondo.

Our children looked at the images of your school surrounding area, of the streets and of the houses around it, they compared them to ours, then, answering some questions we had prepared, expressed by written their impressions.

La scuola / About the school

" La scuola è molto più grande della nostra, ma più bassa visto che ha un solo piano. Le fineste sono particolari: sono grandi,con riquadri bianchi, senza persiane e si aprono da sotto ( le nostre si aprono da sopra!). C'è un ampio cortile coperto dove si può anche giocare. La recinzione è molto elaborata, nera e antica..."

" The school is much bigger than ours, but shorter as it has got only one floor. The windows are particular : they're big, with white squares, without shatters and you open them from the bottom ( we open ours from the top!). There is a huge covered playground where you can also play. The fencing is very elaborated, black and ancient..."

"Le strade sono dritte , ben asfaltate e senza buchi ed in tutte ci sono i marciapiedi ( noi non abbiamo marciapiedi a Francavilla), la segnaletica è precisa e le macchine sono parcheggiate in modo perfetto. In School Street and in London Street ci sono degli alberi, in tutte ci sono dei lampioni con a metà dei globi gialli ( a cosa servono?)..."

"The streets are straight, well asphalted and without holes and in everyones there are pavements ( we haven't pavements in Francavilla), the traffic signs are precise and the cars are parked in a perfect way. In School Street and in London Street there are some trees, in everyones there are some street lamps with in the middle some yellow globes ( what are they for?)..."

Le case / about the houses

"Le case hanno tutte lo stesso colore della scuola ,rosso mattone, e rendono il paesaggio spento ed un po' tetro. Le nostre case sono, invece, chiare o colorate e rendono tutto più allegro. Sono piuttosto basse, tutte allineate e attaccate eccetto in School Street dove si notano alcune villette con un piccolo cortile. I tetti sono tutti uguali e grigi ( i nostri sono rossi). Non ci sono balconi e le finestre sono molto grandi, bianche ma senza imposte ( le nostre case hanno più di un balcone e le finestre hanno tutte le imposte) ..."

"The houses have got all the same colour of the school, brick red, and make the view dull and a bit gloomy. Our houses are, instead, fair or coloured and make everything more bright. They're quite short, all leaned and terraced except for School Street where we notice some detached houses with a little yard. The roofs are all the same and grey ( ours are red). There aren't balconies and the windows are very big, white but without shatters ( our houses have got more than a balcony and the windows have got all the shatters)..."

" Per attraversare la strada con sicurezza in Italia, come in Gran Bretagna, ci sono le strisce pedonali e i semafori e, anche da noi, le macchine si devono fermare per far passare i pedoni. A Francavilla abbiamo solo le strisce pedonali, non ci sono semafori perchè il paese è piccolo e non c'è molto traffico..."

"To cross the road safely in Italy, like in Great Britain, there are the zebra crossing and the traffic lights and, also here, the cars must stop to let the pedestrians cross the road. In Francavilla we have got only zebra crossing, there aren't traffic lights because there isn't much traffic.

This is the School Hall - it is where assemblies and concerts are held, where P.E. lessons take place and also the school dinners are served.

My class looked at the maps on Tuesday and enjoyed searching for the streets which you named. Then, I showed the class your photos today - they thought the town of Francavilla looked about the same size as Chesterton. (between perhaps 5,000 - 10,000 people)

Luigi Ferrara Street : buildings look colourful, nice balconies, we dot really have balconies in UK, one girl thought street looked narrow, another girl said "wide" so we can't agree ! I like the shade provided by the trees.

A. Cianca other entrance (?) It was nice to see mountains in the background, we do not have countryside like this on our doorstep, I noticed the cars seemed quite small, one girl thought they were parked in a strange way. (not in line or parallel with each other !!!)

Ciancia"(?):é stato bello vedere le montagne sullo sfondo, noi non abbiamo campagne come queste ad un passo da casa nostra, ho notato che le macchine sembrano abbastanza piccole, una bambina ha pensato che sono parcheggiate in uno strano modo ( non allineate o parallele con le altre).

Viceconte Street : nice weather, cars parked straight ! Mountain scenery, street looks wider here. Houses are quite light in colour. (white or cream) Most houses in UK are dark brown (or dark red bricks)

Town hall looks pretty / fancy. We like the trees planted outside. We noticed the Italy flag and the European Community flag and the notice board. What sort of messages will be on the notice board ?

We noticed shutters across the windows - to keep the hot sun out ? We do not need those in UK because our weather very rarely goes above 20 degrees celsius.

The snow gives a lovely atmosphere - again we only see it maybe 5 or 10 days per year and even then it will not be very heavy. (thick) We have heavy snow in Scotland where they ski-ing but that is 400-500 kilometres North of us !

We saw the images of your town on the blog and we decided to know it better. We went on "Google maps" and did a virtual walk through the streets, the avenues, the squares ad the walks of Chesterton. Then we looked for your school, the street in which it is and all the ones surround it: it was a really interesting trip!

Alberi, Presepi e Decorazioni natalizie/ Trees, Cribs and Christmas Decorations

Dai primi giorni di dicembre fino all'ultimo giorno prima delle vacanze natalizie, gli alunni di tutte le classi della nostra scuola primaria "A. Ciancia" e della scuola dell'infanzia "G. Rodari" sono stati impegnati in attività didattiche riguardanti il Natale. Insieme agli insegnanti, nelle varie classi, hanno addobbato alberi, allestito presepi, decorato le finestre, realizzato biglietti augurali e piccoli regali con le proprie mani per i loro genitori, intonato canti natalizi, preparato drammatizzazioni, imparato poesie, ricercato informazioni... il tutto per vivere tutti insieme, nel modo più consapevole e sentito, questo particolare momento dell'anno.
From the first days of December till the last day before the Christmas holidays, the pupils of all the classes of our "A. Ciancia" primary school and of the"G. Rodari" infant school were busy in didactical activities referred to Christmas. With all the teachers , in the various classrooms, they put up trees, set up cribs, decorated windows, made Christmas cards and little gifts with their own hands for their parents, sang Christmas carols, prepared dramas, learnt poems, searched information ... everythings to live all together, in the most conscious and heartfelt way, this particular time of the year.

ll clima di preparazione al Natale non è stato vissuto dagli alunni solo a scuola ma anche nelle proprie case. Anche lì, ognuno ha preparato il proprio presepe, il proprio albero, le proprie decorazioni in attesa del grande evento. I bambini della classe 5^B hanno fotografato alcuni dei loro preparativi.
The Christmas preparation atmosphere hasn't been lived only at school but in own homes as well. Also there, each one prepared his own crib, his own tree, his own decorations waiting the great event. The class 5 B children photographed some of their preparations.

I want to tell you about our way to spent the last days before Christmas through a kind of diary about our preparations for this festivity in this last week:

Voglio parlarvi del nostro modo di trascorrere gli ultimi giorni prima di Natale attraverso una specie di diario sui nostri preparativi natalizi a scuola:

15-12- 2008
The children have made beautiful shiny (silver, gold) Christmas cards for their parents. I asked the children to think of THREE things to thank their parents for (not just material things but also those which cannot be bought with money - care, attention, love, etc.) and also ONE thing they would promise to do for their parents next year. (tidy their bedroom, look after a younger brother / sister or even a pet)

Then this afternoon we were invited to the local high school to see a performance of Dick Whitington. (a pantomime, where the audience are expected to join in and sing and shout things !) It is set in the middle ages and a young, poor boy travels to London to find work. He finds love with Alice but first he has to fight off some cruel people who are selfish and intending to rob the people Dick works for. The cast sang a song from High School Musical and they even mentioned me ! "That guy in the audience with the long hair !"

Poi questo pomeriggio siamo stati invitati presso una scuola superiore locale per vedere una rappresentazione di Dick Whitington( una pantomima, dove il pubblico può essere coinvolto nel cantare e gridare cose!).È ambientata nel Medioevo e un povero, giovane ragazzo viaggia verso Londra per trovare lavoro. Si innamora di Alice, ma prima deve lottare contro persone crudeli che sono egoiste ed intendono derubare le persone per i lavori di Dick. Il cast ha cantato una canzone di High School Music ed hanno perfino menzionato me! “Quel tipo fra il pubblico con i capelli lunghi!”

When we returned to school, (and after the children had gone home) we had our first proper staff rehearsal of Cinderella. It is - yet again - a pantomime. The Prince cannot find a bride and so his mother and father, the King and Queen, organise a ball (large party) for him to meet - hopefully - a beautiful lady. It all turns out happily for him in the end, the rehearsals are very funny because we are all quite hopeless as actors and giggle too much ! The show takes place Thursday morning.

Quando siamo tornati a scuola, (dopo che i bambini erano andati a casa) abbiamo fatto la nostra prima dello staff scelto di Cenerentola. È, ancora una volta , una pantomima. Il principe non riesce a trovare una sposa e perciò sua madre e suo padre, il Re e la Regina, organizzano un ballo ( una grande festa)per lui perché incontri, invano, una bella dama. Tutto finisce bene per lui alla fine, le prove sono molto divertenti perché siamo tutti quasi senza speranze come attori e ridacchiamo con imbarazzo veramente troppo! Lo spettacolo avrà luogo giovedì mattina.

here's today's instalment of Christmas preparations :a local church have sent cards for all the children,the violin group (for Year 3 children - aged 7,8) are preparing for a concert for parents.The choir over the next couple of days will be visiting an old persons' (pensioners) retirement home across the road from the school. They will sing to the residents and also will be visiting a hospital about one mile from us (nearly two kilometres) from us and will sing to one of the wards there.A second rehearsal takes place tonight (after school) for our staff who will perform 'Cinderella' on Thursday morning.

Ecco l’ordine del giorno dei preparativi natalizi:
la chiesa locale ha mandato dei biglietti per tutti i bambini,
il gruppo dei violini(per i bambini del 3° anno-7,8 anni) sta preparando un concerto per i genitori,
il coro per i prossimi due giorni farà visita ad una casa per pensionati attraverso la strada della scuola. Canteranno per gli ospiti e visiteranno anche un ospedale a circa un miglio da noi ( quasi due chilometri) e canteranno in una delle corsie lì.
Una seconda prova avrà luogo stasera ( dopo la scuola) per il nostro staff che rappresenterà “Cenerentola” giovedì mattina.

Today's stuff :the kids have brought in CD's and they will decide the music for our dance party, yes I know it sounds like TOO much fun really but at least they're keeping fit !Their favourites seem to be :High School Musical, Rihanna, Pussycat Dolls, Abba Girls Aloud, Cascada and we have a DVD showing party dance moves which they can copy from the screen, they are :Cha Cha Slide,The Ketchup Song,Macarena,YMCA,It's A Tragedy,Saturday Night,Achy Breaky Heart.

Gli impegni di oggi:i ragazzi hanno portato dei CD e decideranno la musica per la nostra festa danzante, sì so che sembra TROPPO divertente in realtà ma almeno si mantengono in forma!
Le loro preferite sembrano essere:High School Musical, Rihanna, Pussycat Dolls, Abba, Girls Aloud, Cascada. Abbiamo un DVD che mostra movimenti per feste danzanti che possono copiare dallo schermo, sono:
Cha Cha Slide, The Ketchup Song,Macarena, YMCA, It's A Tragedy Saturday Night, Achy Breaky Heart.
Then we will finish the Nativity Story covering the Anunciation from Angel gabriel, the journey to Bethlehem, staying at the inn, the shepherds visited by the angel, fleeing Herod's men.Tonight is the final rehearsal of the Staff Band - yes there is a band !1 piano, 1 keyboards, 3 flutes, 3 African drums and maybe 3 or 4 singers.

Poi finiremo la Storia della natività che va dall’annunciazione dell’angelo Gabiele, il viaggio verso Betlemme, il soggiorno alla locanda, i pastori visitati dall’angelo,sfuggendo gli uomini di Erode.
Questa sera la prova finale del complesso dello staff- Sì c’è un complesso!
1 pianoforte, 1 tastiera, 3 flauti, tre tamburi africani e forse 3 o 4 cantanti.

I'll just tell you about tomorrow our last day of the year at school.We start with 'Wake Up Shake Up', this happens every day from 8:30 - 8:50, 20 minutes exercise to music for those pupils who choose to participate. Just after 9:00 the pantomime will start, it is very silly and supposed to be funny - the audience are encouraged to shout things at the actors. Then the staff "Band" will play 5 songs which the children will join in with.Oh Little Drummer Boy, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Jingle Bells, Rudolf The Red Nosed Reindeer, Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree.

Vi dirò di domani:nostro ultimo giorno dell’anno a scuola.
Cominciamo con “ Svegliatevi Agitatevi”, questo avviene ogni giorno dalle 8:30-8:50, 20 minuti di esercizi con la musica per quegli alunni che scelgono di partecipare. Subito dopo, 9:00, la pantomima comincerà, è molto sciocca e suppongo sia divertente – il pubblico viene incoraggiato a gridare cose agli attori. Poi il complesso dello staff suonerà 5 canzoni alle quali i bambini si uniranno.

Later my class will have a little party in the class with pop, crisps, biscuits, some chocolate, this would be the ONLY day they would be allowed sweet things to eat during school time , at the end of the day they might be shown a film (or part of a film) as a treat such as Scrooge, Home Alone, Christmas with the Muppets, in other words a film with a Christmas theme.By the way, tonight our primary school choir sing with other local primary schools at the local trinity Church. (It is Church of England)

Più tardi la mia classe farà una piccola festa in classe con pop corn, patatine, biscotti, della cioccolata, questo sarà l’UNICO giorno in cui saranno permesse cose dolci da mangiare durante l’orario scolastico, alla fine della giornata sarà fatto vedere un film (o parte di un film) come un estratto di Scrooge, Home Alone, Natale con i Muppets, in altre parole un film di argomento natalizio.
A proposito, questa sera il coro della nostra scuola primaria, canterà con le altre scuole primarie locali nella nostra Chiesa della trinità ( la Chiesa di Inghilterra).

Aspettando Natale /Waiting for Christmas

Nel mese di Dicembre a scuola abbiamo lavorato e preparato tante cose per il Natale. Abbiamo imparato e cantato canti natalizi, abbiamo addobbato un albero riciclando bottiglie e bicchieri di plastica, abbiamo preparato, come lavoretto, la "scopina scacciaguai".
La "scopina scacciaguai" è un piccola scopa che, non solo nel periodo di Natale, si tiene dietro la porta perchè, si dice, tenga lontano tutti i guai da casa.
Così, aspettando il Natale, ci siamo divertiti stando insieme in armonia.
During the month of December at school we worked and prepared a lots of things for Christmas. We learnt and sang Christmas Carols, we put up a tree recycling plastic bottles and glasses, we made, as a little work, the "little throw away troubles broom".
The "little throw away troubles broom" is a little broom that, not only in Christmas time, is kept behind the door because, they say, it keeps away all the troubles from the home.
So, waiting for Christmas, we had fun staying together in harmony.

Tradizionalmente , nella nostra scuola, gli insegnanti e gli alunni di ogni classe preparano insieme dei "lavoretti" natalizi, piccoli doni che ogni bambino porterà a casa, l'ultimo giorno di scuola prima delle vacanze natalizie, e darà ai propri genitori.

Traditionally, in our school, the teachers and the pupils of each class made together some Christmas " little works", little gifts that each child will bring home, in the last day before Christmas holidays, and will give their parents.

Alle porte del Pollino / At the Pollino doors

Nei giorni 17-18 e 19 ottobre, presso il ristorante S. Nicola di Francavilla in Sinni (PZ), si è tenuto una interessantissima manifestazione dal titolo “Alle porte del Pollino” a cui hanno partecipato autorità politiche, artigiani , imprenditori e allevatori di numerosi paesi.
I visitatori, accorsi numerosi nei tre giorni della manifestazione, hanno avuto modo di osservare splendidi animali quali cavalli, mucche, vitelli, pecore, capre, conigli, lepri e persino esemplari di asini, un animale ormai scomparso dalle nostre zone, di gustare le specialità tipiche locali, quali biscotti, ciambelle, pizze, formaggi, castagne, carne alla brace, salsicce ed altro che i numerosi stands mettevano a loro disposizione, e di ammirare numerosi e splendidi prodotti dell’artigianato zonale, dai costumi antichi della signora Lofrano di Francavilla ai campanacci per bovini, dalle splendide zampogne del liutaio terranovese ai ferri per le zampe dei cavalli, dai pizzi e merletti alla pasta casereccia, e così via, in un continuo
mescolarsi di colori e profumi.
I tre giorni della manifestazione sono stati resi più piacevoli dalla presenza di numerosi cavallerizzi che hanno dato spettacolo con i loro cavalli e che hanno accompagnato i ragazzi, anche i più piccoli, a fare nuove esperienze avvicinandoli ai loro animali e facendo loro compiere qualche passeggiata sulla loro groppa.
La presenza della banda locale, diretta dal prof. Pisani, ha allietato la manifestazione con brani musicali di alto livello.
Nel corso della manifestazione non è mancato il momento culturale tenuto all’interno della sala del ristorante S. Nicola dove politici, veterinari e persone della cultura hanno parlato dell’importanza dei prodotti tipici locali e delle loro caratteristiche. In questa occasione è stata presentata anche una interessante raccolta fotografica sul cavallo, opera del sig. Rocco Giorgio.
During the days 17th-18th and 19th October, in the S. Nicola restaurant of Francavilla in Sinni (PZ), a very interesting performance, named “alle porte del Pollino” ( At the Pollino doors”, in which political authorities, craftsmen, managers and breeders from many towns participated, took place.
The visitors, arrived numerous during the three days of the performance, could looked at wonderful animals like horses, cows, calves, sheep, goats, rabbits, hares and even specimens of donkey, an animal now disappeared in our zones, taste the typical local goods like biscuits, scones, pizza, cheese, chestnuts, barbecued meat, sausages and others that the many stands put at their disposal, and admire numerous and wonderful products, of the local handicraft, from the Francavilla Mrs. Lofrano’ s ancient costumes to the cowbell, from the Terranova maker of stringed instruments’ wonderful bagpipes to the horseshoes, from the laces to the homemade pasta, and so on, in a continuous mixing of colours and scents.
The three days of the performance were made more pleasant by the presence of many horsemen that make spectacle with their horses and that accompanied the kids , even the younger, to do new experiences drawing them near their animals and letting them ride on their back.
The presence of the local band, conducted by the Prof. Pisani, gladdened the performance with musical pieces of high quality.
In the course of the performance the cultural moment didn’t miss and took place inside the hall of the “S. Nicola” restaurant where politicians, vets and culture people talked about the importance of typical local products and about their peculiarities.
In this occasion has been also shown an interesting collection of photos about the horse, Mr. Rocco Giorgio’s work.

What we know about Italy!/ Ciò che sappiamo dell'Italia!

Each class of our school produced a big display on a country and - yes - I have chosen Italy for my class. Map, cities, personalities, some history. Started by asking the children WHAT they knew already. Our connection is that there was a Roman settlement here 2000 years ago because we were on a main marching route (we think) between Derby and Chester. Some children knew Rome was the capital city of Italy, that Italy are the current (soccer) World Cup holders and that pizza and pasta originate from Italy. About these last ones, the children enjoyed the story about the Margherita pizza originated in Naples when the Queen was visiting and a local pizza - maker wanted to show his patriotism by making a pizza in the colours of the Italy flag. Then we decided that we wanted to know about main towns, buildings and people which resulted in the Colliseum, the Vatican, the leaning tower of Pisa as well as the music of Pavarotti and Bocelli. Some children seemed to know the names of Leonardo (Da Vinci) and Michelangelo but further questioning revealed that they are the names of two cartoon superheroes from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Sporting enthusiasts knew that Rossi is the cycling champion and Capello is the England national team football manager !

Ogni classe della nostra scuola ha prodotto un grande cartellone su una nazione e – Sì- io ho scelto l’Italia per la mia classe. Cartina, città, personaggi, qualche storia. Ho cominciato chiedendo ai bambini CIÒ che già sapevano.
Il nostro collegamento è che c’era un accampamento romano qui 2000 anni fa perché eravamo sulla strada ( si pensa ) fra Derby e Chester. Qualche bambino sapeva che Roma era la capitale dell’Italia, che l’Italia è l’attuale detentrice della Coppa del Mondo e che la pizza e la pasta sono originarie dell’Italia. Riguardo queste ultime, ai bambini è piaciuta la storia della pizza Margherita che ha avuto origine a Napoli quando la Regina era in visita ed un pizzaiolo volle mostrare il suo patriottismo facendo una pizza con i colori della bandiera italiana. Poi abbiamo deciso che volevamo sapere delle città principali, delle costruzioni e delle persone che sono risultate essere il Colosseo, il Vaticano, la torre pendente di Pisa e anche la musica di Pavarotti e Bocelli. Qualche bambino sembrava conoscere i nomi di Leonardo ( Da Vinci) e Michelangelo ma ulteriori domande hanno rivelato che erano i nomi di due supereroi di cartoni delle Tartarughe Ninja mutanti adolescenti. Gli entusiasti dello sport sapevano che Rossi è un campione di motociclismo e che Capello è il manager della squadra nazionale dell’Inghilterra!

Our Trip to Apedale Country Park / La nostra escursione al Parco Rurale di Apedale

Last week we went for a trip to Apedale, a very nice and typical Country park near our town Chesterton where you can visit an acient wood called Watermills wood.
As the name, Watermills Wood, suggests - there were, at one time, mills in these woods which ground things such as corn or wheat into flour. Later, coal mines were dug here using water from the stream running through the wood. We can tell that the opencast mine did not dig into the wood by the age of the trees, we know they are very old from their size. The path is where the narrow railway lines were and a steam engine at the top of the woods would help pull wagons up to collect the coal. When the hole left by the opencast mine was filled in, trees were planted in some places but some parts were left as open grassland. This was to encourage certain wildlife to live here. (e.g. skylarks and lapwings, known as ‘peawits’, who nest on the ground.) Water and heat is needed to make steam. Burning coal provided the heat and water was drawn from the pond. Silver birch trees grow very quickly and so that explains the number of them here. When all the industry stopped, these trees would have been some of the first ones to grow. The Brickworks can be seen from here. 50 years ago several ovens could be seen with black smoke coming out of their chimneys. Chesterton High School, the site of an early Roman fort, can be seen on the hill opposite. There are clues there was a coalmine. For example, they had to separate the stuff they did want (coal) from the stuff they didn’t want, such as a rock called shale. As they dug, the rocks from Watermills Colliery were dumped onto a heap. As the rocks got higher, the materials became squashed and the gas contained in them burned. (spontaneous combustion) Sometimes these fires can last for two years. In the wood we can see red ash which is the name of the rock after it has burned. Traditional British trees such as oak, elm and beech take a long time to grow. So, to avoid the park looking bare, fast growing trees such as the willow, alder and silver birch were planted. Oak, elm and beech were planted in between. The plan is to remove the ‘fast growers’ once the others are established to a reasonable height. The limestone path from the Heathcote tower to the gate leading out of the woods, was laid by Churchfields schoolchildren some years ago. We can see the base of the old tower, there would have been a tall chimney above this. Cages took the men and coal up and down and steam was needed to power the engine for the railway. Water was taken from nearby pools for the steam. The chimney was to carry away the smoke from the coal being burned. Richard Heathcote owned the mines. He had realised the valley had potential for profit and so he purchased the land. At the base of the tower he had religious messages engraved : “live and let live” and “regard the end”. (this last phrase meant : prepare for when you die).
La settimana scorsa siamo andati a fare un'escursione ad Apedale, un bellissimo e tipico Parco Rurale vicino alla nostra città Chesterton , dove si può visitare un antico bosco chiamato Watermills Wood ( Bosco dei Mulini).

Come il nome, Watermills Wood, suggerisce, in questi boschi,c’erano un tempo dei mulini che trasformavano prodotti come granturco o grano in farina. Più tardi, furono scavate qui miniere di carbone che usavano l’acqua del ruscello che correva attraverso il bosco. Possiamo dire che lo scavo delle miniere non si è spinto nel bosco dall’età degli alberi, noi sappiamo che sono molto vecchi dalla loro grandezza. Il sentiero si trova dove era la stretta linea dei binari e un motore a vapore in cima al bosco aiutava a tirare i vagoni per raccogliere il carbone. Quando il vuoto lasciato dallo scavo della miniera fu riempito, in alcuni posti furono piantati alberi, ma alcune parti furono lasciate come radure aperte. Ciò per incoraggiare alcune specie di vita selvatica a vivere qui (allodole e pavoncelle, conosciute come “ peawits”, che nidificano sul terreno). Acqua e calore sono serviti per produrre vapore. Bruciando carbone producevano calore e l’acqua veniva presa dallo stagno. Le betulle argentate crescono molto rapidamente e così ciò spiega il loro numero qui. Quando tutto il lavoro si fermò, questi alberi devono essere stati i primi a crescere. Le fabbriche di mattoni si possono vedere da qui. 50 anni fa spesso si potevano vedere i forni con un fumo nero che usciva dai loro camini. La scuola superiore di Chesterton , il sito di un recente forte romano , si può vedere sulla collina opposta. Ci sono indizi della presenza di una miniera di carbone. Per esempio, si doveva separare il materiale che serviva da quella che non serviva come una roccia chiamata scisto. Mentre scavavano, le rocce della miniera di carbon fossile di Watermills venivano scaricate su un cumulo. Man mano che le rocce divenivano più alte, i materiali venivano compressi ed il gas in essi contenuto bruciava (combustione spontanea). A volte questi fuochi duravano per due anni. Nel bosco possiamo vedere cenere rossa che è il nome della roccia dopo essere sata bruciata. Alberi tradizionali britannici come quercia, olmo e faggio impiegano lunghi anni per crescere. Così per evitare che il parco sembrasse spoglio furono piantati alberi a crescita rapida come il salice, l’ontano e la betulla argentata. La quercia, l’olmo e la betulla furono piantati in mezzo. Il piano è di rimuovere le piante a crescita rapida una volta che gli altri siano giunti ad una ragionevole altezza. Il sentiero calcareo dalla torre di Heathcote al cancello che limita il bosco e stato tracciato dagli alunni della scuola di Churchfields alcuni anni fa. Si può vedere la base della vecchia torre, ci dovrebbe essere stata un’alta ciminiera sopra. Gabbie portavano uomini e carbone su e giù e il vapore serviva per far funzionare il motore della ferrovia. L’acqua per il vapore veniva presa dal vicino stagno. La ciminiera serviva per condurre via il fumo del carbone che veniva bruciato. Richard Heathcote possedeva le miniere. Aveva capito che la valle aveva un potenziale di guadagno e così aveva comprato le terre. Alla base della torre aveva inciso messaggi religiosi. “ vivi e lascia vivere” e “ considera la fine”( quest’ultima frase significava: preparati per quando morirai).

"Traditions across Europe" è stato selezionato tra i progetti italiani etwinning dell'anno scolastico 2007/2008 e pubblicato nel volume "Le competenze chiave nell'apprendimento permanente: il contributo di eTwinning" relativamente alla competenza "Consapevolezza ed espressione culturali". La presentazione della pubblicazione e del progetto è avvenuta durante il seminario tenutosi a Pistoia nei giorni 10 e 11 novembre 2008.
"Traditions across Europe" has been selected among the Italian etwinnig projects of the school year 2007 / 2008 and published in the volume :"Le competenze chiave nell'apprendimento permanente: il contributo di eTwinning" (The key competences in the longlife learning: the Etwinning contribute) in order to the competence "Consapevolezza ed espressione culturali" (cultural consciousness and expression). The presentation of the publication and of the project took place during the seminary of Pistoia in the days 10 and 11 November 2008.

La Festa dei Caduti: il 4 novembre/ The Fallen Day: 4th November

Il 4 novembre, importante data storica per l'Italia, si celebra l'armistizio del 1918 che pose fine alla Prima Guerra Mondiale. In questa occasione si è soliti ricordare quanti hanno dato la loro vita per la Patria e celebrare con sfilate, deposizione di corone vicino ai monumenti dei caduti, L'alzabandiera, l'intonazione dell'Inno nazionale con la mano sul cuore, discorsi per ricordare il passato. Quest'anno anche noi abbiamo partecipato ad una manifestazione organizzata dall'amministrazione comunale.

On the 4th November, important historical date for Italy, we celebrate the 1918 armistice that ended the First World War. In this occasion we usually remember all the people gave their lives for the Country and and celebrate with parades, leaving wreaths next to the war memorials, the flag-raising ceremony, the intonation of the National Anthem with our hand on our heart and speeches to remember the past. This year we also partecipate to a ceremony organized by the municipal authority.

Romans and Celts in Britain and in Chesterton/Romani e Celti in Gran Bretagna ed a Chesterton

The Romans ruled over many lands. Their leaders wanted to make the Roman Empire as large as they could.

I Romani governarono su molte terre. I loro capi volevano rendere il loro Impero più grande che potevano.

The Romans lived in Britain nearly two thousand years ago and they lived here for over three hundred years. The first Roman soldiers arrived in AD 43 and Britain ceased to be a province of Rome in AD 400. The Romans came from Rome which is situated in the country of Italy.

I Romani vissero in Gran Bretagna quasi duemila anni fa e vissero qui per oltre trecento anni. I primi soldati romani arrivarono nel 43 DC e la Gran Bretagna cessò di essere una provincia di Roma nel 400 DC. Arrivarono da Roma che era situata in Italia.

The people who lived in Britain when the Romans invaded were the Celts. They had come from Europe to find good farming land. There were many different tribes living in Celtic Britain and they often fought against each other. Some of the tribes fought against the Romans but other Celts wanted the Romans to stay.

Le persone che vivevano in Gran Bretagna quando fu invasa dai Romani erano i Celti. Erano arrivati dall’Europa in cerca di terre da coltivare. C’erano tante tribù diverse che vivevano nella Gran Bretagna celtica e spesso combattevano le une contro le altre. Alcune delle tribù combatterono contro i Romani ma altri Celti volevano che i Romani restassero.

We know what Celtic Britain was like because descriptions have been written by Romans but not by Celts because they could not read or write.
Some Celts lived in villages near water and good farming land. Some lived in hill-forts surrounded by ditches and high banks made of earth, timber and stone. The Celts wove cloth dyed in bright colours. They made beautiful jewellery from gold, silver or bronze. In addition to this they made tools and every day objects from bone, flint, bronze and wood.

Noi sappiamo come i Celti fossero perché le descrizioni furono scritte dai Romani ma non dai Celti perché essi non sapevano leggere o scrivere.
Alcuni Celti vivevano in villaggi vicino all’acqua ed a terreni buoni per la coltivazione. Alcuni vivevano in forti sulle colline circondati da fossati e alti argini fatti di terra, legno e pietra. I Celti tessevano stoffa dipinta di colori vivaci. Facevano gioielli d’oro, argento o bronzo. Oltre a ciò costruivano utensili e oggetti quotidiani con osso, selce, bronzo e legno.

Roman Soldiers
Young men, who had to be strong, fit and tall, from all over the empire joined the Roman army. Roman citizens became legionary soldiers whereas men from other nations became auxillary (helper) troops. Their uniforms were designed to keep them safe and warm. It consisted of armour made of metal strips over a wool or linen tunic, leather sandals, a thick cloak, a padded leather helmet and short trousers or woollen underpants.

I soldati romani
Giovani uomini, che dovevano essere forti, in buona salute e alti, provenienti da tutto l’Impero si unirono all’esercito romano . I cittadini romani divennero soldati legionari mentre gli uomini delle altre nazioni divennero truppe ausiliarie ( aiutanti). Le loro uniformi erano fatte in modo da mantenerli salvi e caldi. Consistevano in un armatura fatta di strisce di metallo su una tunica di lana o di lino, sandali di pelle, un pesante mantello, un elmetto imbottito di pelle e pantaloni corti o mutande di lana.

Most Roman soldiers lived in forts, such as the one which was situated at the top of Castle Street. Villages grew up around the forts and many Roman soldiers married Celtic women. Their families would live in the villages. Tradesmen and craftsmen had their shops in the village. The village which was discovered across the road from our school was similar to this.

La maggior parte dei soldati romani vivevano nei forti, come quello che era situato sulla cima di Castle street. I villaggi crebbero attorno ai forti e molti soldati romani sposarono donne celtiche. Le loro famiglie vivevano nei villaggi. Commercianti e artigiani avevano le loro botteghe nel villaggio. Il villaggio che è stato scoperto lungo la strada dalla nostra scuola era simile a questo.

The fort was built on the high ground in Chesterton at the top of Castle Street on the same site as Chesterton High School. The height of the site gave the Romans a good view of the surrounding area and they could easily see their enemy approaching. Daily traffic passed through the fort and this could be watched by the look outs on Bignall Hill. Bignall Hill was an excellent signal station because it was an extremely high vantage point. When the fort site was excavated (dug up) the base of an oven was discovered which indicates the probable site of a catering block within the fort.
Il forte era costruito su un’altura a Chesterton in cima Castle street nello stesso luogo della scuola superiore di Chesterton .L’altezza del luogo permetteva ai romani una buona vista della zona circostante ed essi potevano facilmente vedere il loro nemico avvicinarsi. Il traffico giornaliero passava attraverso il forte e questo poteva essere controllato dalle sentinelle sulla collina di Bignall. La collina di Bignall era un ottima stazione di vigilanza poiché si trovava in un punto di altezza estremamente vantaggiosa.quando furono fatti gli scavi del forte fu rinvenuta la base di un forno cosa che indica la presenza di un luogo di preparazione dei cibi entro il forte.

When the Romans invaded a country, the army had to be able to move with their supplies and equipment as quickly as possible. Britain had no proper roads so Roman soldiers soon started planning and building them. Sometimes Celtic slaves were forced to help.

Quando i Romani invadevano una nazione, l’esercito doveva essere in grado di spostarsi con i loro viveri ed equipaggiamento il più velocemente possibile. La gran Bretagna non aveva strade adatte così i soldati romani cominciarono subito a progettarle ed a costruirle. A volte i prigionieri celtici erano costretti ad aiutare.

Archaeologists have found the remains of houses of different sizes. Some of the small houses in towns were also shops. They were built facing the street with living rooms at the back. Rich people lived in much bigger houses. They were built around courtyards and inside had tiled or mosaic floors and painted walls. Some Celts began living like this. However, most Celts continued living as they had before.

Gli archeologi hanno trovato i resti di case di diverse grandezze.
Alcune delle piccole case nelle città erano anche negozi. Si affacciavano sulle strade con i soggiorni sul retro. Le persone ricche vivevano in case molto più grandi. Erano costruite attorno ai cortili e dentro avevano pavimenti di ceramica o mosaico ed i muri dipinti. Alcuni Celti cominciarono a vivere così. Però , la maggior parte dei Celti continuò a vivere come prima.

Near to Holditch were found the foundations of a large Roman house. It was quite a special Roman house because it was well – built. Pen, ink, writing instruments and a counting frame were discovered. All these factors indicate that a Roman of some importance lived in the house. Coins found on the site indicate that it was occupied from AD69 to AD 138.
Nelle vicinanze di Holditch sono state rinvenute le fondazioni di una grande casa Romana. Era una casa romana abbastanza speciale perché era ben costruita. Sono stati ritrovati penne, inchiostro, strumenti per scrivere e tavole per contare. Tutti questi fattori indicano che un Romano di una certa importanza viveva lì. In Roman Britain most people, Romans and Celts, lived in the countryside. They grew crops of wheat, oats and barley, and raised cattle, sheep and pigs. The Romans also brought to Britain some of their favourite foods like cabbage, carrots, pears and plums, which people in England had not eaten before. Ordinary Celts in Britain did not have a wide choice of food, although they did hunt animals for meat. Very poor people ate porridge.
Whether they were in the town or country, most Roman homes were very comfortable. The main meal of the day was called ‘cena’ and it took place in the late afternoon. Rich people used expensive Samian bowls from Gaul and friends were sometimes invited but they had to bring their own cutlery and napkins.

Nella Bretagna romana la maggior parte delle persone, Romani e Celti, vivevano in campagna. Coltivavano grano, avena e orzo, e allevavano bestiame, pecore e maiali. I romani portarono in Gran Bretagna alcuni dei loro cibi preferiti come cavolo, carote, pere e prugne, che le persone in Inghilterra non avevano mai mangiato prima. In genere i Celti in Gran Bretagna non avevano una grande scelta di cibo, sebbene cacciassero animali per la carne. Le persone mangiavano pappa d’avena (porridge).

From the evidence found by archaeologists we know that the Romans worshipped many gods. These gods were important in everyday life. They believed that spirits called ‘lares’ protected different parts of the home. Vesta protected the fire and hearth, Janus, was the god of the door and the ‘penates’ were the spirits that guarded the family store cupboard. The Romans also believed that their Emperor was a god.
Like the Romans, the Celts were pagans and worshipped many gods. When the Romans invaded Britain they allowed the Celts to carry on worshipping their own gods. They even adopted some of the Celtic gods themselves. But the Romans did not like the Celtic priests , who were called Druids, because they were powerful leaders.

Dalle testimonianze trovate dagli archeologi noi sappiamo che i Romani adoravano molti dei. I loro dei erano importanti nella vita quotidiana. Credevano che gli spiriti chiamati “Lari” proteggessero diverse parti della casa. Vesta proteggeva il fuoco e la terra, Giano, era il dio della porta e i “Penati” erano gli spiriti che proteggevano la credenza della famiglia. I Romani credevano anche che il loro Imperatore fosse un dio.
Come i Romani i Celti erano pagani e adoravano molti dei. Quando i Romani invasero la Gran Bretagna essi permisero ai Celti di continuare ad adorare i loro dei. Adottarono persino loro stessi alcuni dei celtici. Ma ai Romani non piacevano i preti celtici, che erano chiamati Druidi, perché erano capi potenti.

When the Romans invaded Britain a new religion called Christianity was spreading through the Roman Empire. Christians followed the teachings of Jesus Christ, who had lived in another part of the Roman Empire. The emperors thought the Christians were becoming too powerful and they killed many of them. Some of the soldiers who came to Britain were Christians. About 250 years after the Romans came to Britain, Constantine became the emperor. He became a Christian and made Christianity the official religion of the Empire, although some of the Celts continued to secretly worship their own gods.

Quando i Romani invasero la Gran Bretagna una nuova religione chiamata Cristianesimo cominciò a diffondersi per tutto l’Impero Romano. I Cristiani seguivano gli insegnamenti di Gesù Cristo, che era vissuto in un’altra parte dell’impero. Gli imperatori pensarono che i Cristiani stessero diventando troppo potenti e ne uccisero molti. Alcuni dei soldati che arrivarono in Gran Bretagna erano Cristiani. Circa 250 anni dopo l’arrivo dei Romani in Gran Bretagna, Costantino divenne imperatore. The Celts did not have shops like ours. They made many things themselves from raw materials like gold, tin, lead, copper, iron and wool. They exchanged goods with other Celts. Exchanging goods without money is called ‘bartering’. Soldiers could not barter. They were paid with coins so the Celts began to take coins in exchange for goods. By Caesar’s time Celts were travelling to the Roman Empire to trade. They took woollen cloaks with hoods, rugs, beer, dogs and raw materials. These are called ‘exports’. Goods that are brought into Britain from another country are called ‘imports’.

I Celti non avevano i negozi come i nostri. Costruivano molte cose da soli con materie prime come oro, alluminio, piombo, rame, ferro e lana. Scambiavano i prodotti con altri Celti. Lo scambio di prodotti senza denaro si chiama “ baratto”. I soldati non potevano barattare. Venivano pagati in monete così i Celti cominciarono a prendere denaro in cambio di prodotti. Fino al tempo di Cesare i Celti viaggiarono attraverso l’Impero Romano per commerciare. Portavano mantelli di lana con cappucci, tappeti, birra, cani e materie prime. Queste cose vengono chiamate”esportazioni”. I prodotti che vengono portati in Gran Bretagna da altre nazioni sono chiamati “importazioni”.

As time went on more Celtic families became Romanised and they became known as ‘ Romano- Britons’. After about three hundred years after the invasion of Britain, the Roman Empire began to break up. Gradually soldiers were taken away from Britain to fight in other countries. By AD 410 there was no Roman army left in Britain.

Poi arrivò il tempo in cui molte famiglie celtiche divennero romanizzate e vennero conosciuti come “Romano-Bretoni”. Dopo circa trecento anni dall’invasione della Gran Bretagna, l’impero Romano cominciò a decadere, gradualmente i soldati vennero portati via dalla Britannia per combattere in altri paesi. Dal 410 DC non ci fu più un esercito romano in Gran Bretagna.

Nowadays there are several streets in Chesterton named after the Roman settlement (Tiber, Hadrian, Palatine, Brutus, Horatius, Roman).

Oggi ci sono diverse strade a Chesterton nominate dopo l'insediamento romano ( Tiberio, Adriano, Palatino, Bruto, Orazio, Romano).

Last year, at school we had the "Roman Day". In that occasion our pupils got dressed as Romans to show that they once settled here.

L'anno scorso, a scuola, abbiamo celebrato Il "Roman Day". in quella occasione ci siamo vestiti come i Romani per mostrare che una volta erano insediati qui.

OUR SCHOOL’S VISIT TO THE VODAFONE CALL CENTRE IN CHESTERTON, NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYME, UK.

Three of our classes (from Churchfields Primary School) visited Vodafone in October, 2008.
Vodafone are a large employer of call centre operators who deal with customer enquiries as well as sales. Some of our childrens’ parents work there so it was nice for those kids to see what their parents do. The centre is about 400 metres from our school and so it is just a 10 minute walk.
There is lots of very modern equipment and we were shown some brand new technology where hand-held computers are used to contact each other and see each other’s faces live.

Typical comments from the children indicated they thought it was “Amazing” and that the offices were really nice, “like a hotel.” We also discovered that when the offices were being built there in the 1970’s they found the foundations of a Roman house from nearly 2,000 years ago which included fancy pottery from that period. There also used to be a coal mine right next to where the offices are – times have indeed changed for Chesterton ! Some of the children thought they would like to work at Vodafone when they are older.

We discovered there are about 700 people working at the officers, Vodafone made over £500 million last year Worldwide (about three quarters of a billion euros) and the children particularly liked the chocolate treat they were given by Vodafone staff when it was time to leave and return to school !

Tre delle nostre classi ( della Scuola Primaria Churchfields) in ottobre 2008 hanno visitato la Vodafone.
Vodafone è un grande datore di lavoro di operatori di call centre che si occupano delle richieste dei clienti oltre che delle vendite. I genitori di alcuni dei nostri alunni lavorano lì, così è stato bello per quei ragazzi vedere cosa i genitori fanno. Il centro è a quasi 400 metri dalla nostra scuola e perciò è appena una passeggiata di 10 minuti.
Lì c’è un sacco di attrezzatura modernissima e ci è stata mostrata una nuova tecnologia dove computer portatili vengono usati per contattarsi e vedere la diretta faccia di ognuno.

I tipici commenti dei ragazzi facevano capire che essi pensavano che fosse “divertente” e che gli uffici fossero veramente belli, “come un hotel”. Abbiamo anche scoperto che lì, quando si costruivano gli uffici nel 1970, furono trovate le fondamenta di una casa romana di quasi 2000 anni fa che comprendeva ceramica decorata di quel periodo. C’era anche una miniera di carbone proprio accanto al luogo dove sono gli uffici. – I tempi sono cambiati per Chesterton! Alcuni bambini hanno pensato che piacerebbe loro lavorare alla Vodafone quando saranno grandi.

Abbiamo scoperto che negli uffici lavorano circa 700 persone,Vodafone l'anno scorso ha guadagnato in tutto il mondo oltre 500 milioni di sterline ( circa i tre quarti di un bilione di euro) e i bambini hanno gradito particolarmente la cioccolata data loro dallo staff di Vodafone quando è giunto il momento di andare via e tornare a scuola!

We want to show you some images of Chesterton , a little village in Newcastle-under-Lyme, the town where we live.

Vogliamo mostrarvi qualche immagine di Chesterton, una piccola frazione di Newcastle -under-Lyme, la città dove viviamo.

The first : Albert Street (named after the husband of Queen Victoria who was on the throne from 1830 - 1901)This is now Chesterton Youth Club, it has a D.J. who plays CD's most nights and the kids dance. There is also a tuck shop selling sweets, chocolate and drinks. There is an Art room and a pool room where you can play snooker or pool. Open to children aged over 6 on Saturdays and during the week evenings it is open to children over 8. There are computers there also.The youth club used to be a girl's school until approx. 25 years ago.

La prima: Albert Street ( intitolata dopo la morte del marito della Regina Vittoria che fu sul trono dal 1830 - 1901) è adesso il Club Giovanile di Chesterton, ha un D.J. che suona Cd molte sere mentre i ragazzi ballano. C'è anche un negozio di merendine che vende caramelle, cioccolate e bevande. C'e una sala dell'arte e una sala biliardo dove si può giocare a biliardo. Apre ai bambini di oltre 6 anni il sabato e durante le sere settimanali è aperto ai bambini di oltre 8 anni. Lì ci sono anche computers.Il club della gioventù era una scuola per ragazze approssimativamente fino a 25 anni fa.

Questa è Castle Street. In cima a Castle Street c'è la Scuola Superiore di Chesterton dove la maggior parte dei bambini va quando hanno 11 anni( sulla sinistra) e il parco di Chesterton ( sulla destra). Il cartello giallo ( sulla destra della foto) indica che c'è una casa in vendita.

This is Chesterton Holy Trinity Church. It is a C of E church. (Church of England) It was built in 1852 but there was evidence of worship from much earlier times as they found a medieval cross from Saxon times. (about 1000 years old) There is also a Roman Catholic church, an Elim Pentecostal church and a Salvation army chuch in Chesterton.
Questa è la Chiesa della Santissima Trinità di Chesterton. E' una Chiesa C di E ( Chiesa di Inghilterra). Fu costruita nel 1825 ma è stata luogo di culto da molto tempo prima poichè è stata trovata una croce medioevale dei tempi dei Sassoni ( di circa 1000 anni). A Chesterton c'è anche una chiesa Cattolica, una chiesa Pentecostale ed una chiesa dell'Esercito della Salvezza.

Here is Chesterton High School. It is where most of our children go to when they reach 11 years old. It is on a raised piece of land (a small hill) and historians think that is why remains from a small Roman fortress were found at the back of the school when it was being built. The light grey building on the right hand side is the new sports hall where some of our primary school competitions take place. There is also a swimming pool here where primary school visit.
Questa è la Scuola Superiore di Chesterton. E' dove la maggior parte dei nostri ragazzi va quando raggiungono gli 11 anni di età. E' su un innalzamento del terreno ( una piccola collina) e gli storici pensano sia il resto di una piccola fortezza romana che fu trovata dietro la scuola quando cominciò la costruzione.La costruzione verde chiara sulla destra è il nuovo palazzo dello sport dove hanno luogo molte delle gare sportive della scuola primaria. Qui c'è anche una piscina che la scuola primaria usa.

Here is London Road. The tall building closest (on the left) is a dentist's. Beyond there the smaller building is part of our school nursery. Then we reach the outer fence of our playground (the main part of the school sits back away from London Road) and the next building after that was a fish and chip shop. It is now a Chinese take away food shop.
Questa è London Road. La costruzione alta più vicina( sulla sinistra) è lo studio di un dentista. Oltre quella, la costruzione più piccola è parte della scuola dell'Infanzia. Dopo si raggiunge la parte più esterna del nostro cortile (la parte principale della scuole si trova molto più dietro rispetto a London Road) e la costruzione successiva dopo quello era un negozio di "fish and chips". Adesso è negozio di cibo cinese da asporto.
Here we see the entrance to Loomer road. the brown sign points to Apedale Valley, a green area where there used to be several small coal mines. Along Loomer road there is a speedway track where a local team take part in national competitions and there are regular international visitors from Europe. Also in Loomer road (apart from a housing estate where many of our children live) there is an industrial estate which includes many offices, warehouses, distribution centres and small factories. This provides jobs for many of our parents.

Lungo Loomer road c'è una pista di velocità dove una squadra locale partecipa a competizioni nazionali e vengono ospitate regolarmente squadre internazionali provenienti dalla Europa. In Loomer Road ( oltre ad un complesso residenziale dove molti dei nostri bambini vivono) c'è un complesso industriale che comprende molti uffici, depositi, centri di distribuzione e piccole fabbriche. Questo offre lavoro a molti dei nostri genitori.

Giusto per completare il lavoro realizzato l'anno scorso qualche notizia sulla pianta di ulivo presente abbondantemene sul nostro territorio.
Just to complete the work made last year some news about the olive tree you can find largely on our territory.

Alcuni oliveti proprio ai piedi del nostro paese con, sullo sfondo, il fiume Sinni e il vicino paese di Chiaromonte.

Some olive groves just at the foot of our town with, as a background, the river Sinni and the near town Chiaromonte.

LA PIANTA ED IL FRUTTO/THE PLANT AND THE FRUIT

La pianta dell’ulivo, presente in tutti i paesi mediterranei, è tra quelle che maggiormente caratterizzano il panorama delle nostre campagne collinari. La coltivazione dell’ulivo è diffusa su tutto il territorio nazionale, con l’unica esclusione di Valle d’Aosta e Piemonte. L’olivo, però, è coltivato non solo nei paesi del bacino del Mediterraneo ma anche nella California, in qualche parte dell’America centrale e meridionale ed in qualche parte dell’Australia e dell’Africa meridionale.

The olive tree, as in every mediterranean cauntries, is among those ones characterising our hill countries landscape. The olive tree coltivation is popular on all the national territory, with the only exclusion of Valle d’Aosta and Piemonte. The olive tree is cultivated not only in the mediterranean countries but also in California, in some part of the Central and South America and in some part of Australia and of South Africa.

La raccolta delle olive

La raccolta delle olive inizia alla fine di ottobre e i primi giorni di novembre e può avvenire in vari modi:"brucatura":staccare le olive una ad una con le mani dai rami con l’aiuto di scale;"pettinatura":passare nella chioma dell'albero dei pettini chiamati “rastrelli”;"abbacchiatura":raccogliere le olive battendo le piante con pertiche;"raccattatura":raccogliere le olive cadute a terra;"raccolta meccanica":scuotere le piante con mezzi meccanici e provocare la caduta delle olive su apposite reti.

The olive harvest

The olive harvest starts at the end of October and the first days of November and it can be in different ways: “croping”:leave the olives one for one with the hands with the help of stairs. “combing” :pass in the foliage of the tree some combs called Rakes; “downhearting" :harvest the olives hitting the plants with perches; “picking up” :harvest the fallen olives on the ground; “mechanical harvest” :shake the plants with mechanical means and let the olives fall on provided nets.

Il nostro amico Tiglio/ Our friend Lime

Nella nostra bellissima Villa Comunale ci sono alberi di diversa specie, fra questi dei maestosi tigli che, in primavera, diffondono un delizioso profumo ed, in estate, permettono ai bambini di rinfrescarsi e giocare alla loro ombra. Siamo andati a curiosare nella Scuola dell’Infanzia “Gianni Rodari”, allogata nel nostro stesso edificio, ed abbiamo scoperto che i bambini dell’ultimo anno hanno realizzato un lavoro, con bellissime foto, proprio sui tigli della villa comunale.
In our lovely Villa Comunale park there are trees of different specie, among these some majestic limes that, in spring, spread a delicious perfume and, in summer, allowed the children to refresh themselves and play under their shadow. We went and nosed to the “Gianni Rodari” Infant School, situated in our same school building, and we discovered that the last year children made a work, with lovely photos, just about the limes of the Villa Comunale Park.

Vogliamo farvi conoscere i luoghi più antichi del nostro piccolo paese attraverso un lavoro realizzato da una delle scuole dell'infanzia del nostro istituto.

We want to let you know the most ancient places in our little town through a work made by one of the infant schools of our institute.

“…Gli alunni dell’ultimo anno della scuola dell’infanzia di Porta Pia di Francavilla sul Sinni i rioni del proprio paese, mediante esperienze di apprendimento significative.
Condotta mediante momenti ludici, l’attività di apprendimento degli alunni è stata mirata alla scoperta e all’appropriazione di alcuni ambienti vicini e vissuti dai bambini, come contesti di apprendimento per comprendere alcune trasformazioni avvenute, per cogliere alcuni rapporti tra uomo, natura e eventi, partendo dal nome dei rioni del proprio paese.
Sollecitando nei bambini alcuni interrogativi, i docenti hanno motivato gli stessi che si sono divertiti a curiosare, a chiedere in giro, ad osservare a raccogliere informazioni, immagini e impressioni che hanno poi rielaborato ed organizzato mediante attività grafiche, pittoriche, plastiche, motorie, ovvero linguaggi verbali e non verbali, utilizzando registratori, fotocamere e telecamere come strumenti di lettura e scrittura della realtà.
Stimolando la loro creatività si è arrivati alla invenzione di una favola dove, com’è proprio del pensiero infantile, il mondo rappresentato sfoca i suoi confini tra reale e immaginario.
La conseguente realizzazione del fumetto e del film, mediante i quali raccontare la favola è stato lo sfondo integratore che ha dato unitarietà e direzione ad un lavoro scolastico. …”

Run by moments of games, the learning activity has been orientated to the discover and the appropriation of some close habitats and lived by the children as learning contexts to understand some occurred transformations , to pick up some relations among, human, nature and events, starting from the quarters names of own town. Stimulating in the children some questions, the teachers motivated them that had a fun nosing, asking around, looking and gathering information, images and impressions that then they elaborated by graphic, pictorial, plastic, motor activities, or verbal and not verbal languages, using recorder, photo- cameras and video- cameras as reading and writing tools of the reality. Stimulating their creativity they arrived to the invention of a tale where, just like the children’s thought is, the represented world goes out of the focus between real and imaginary. …”
The consequent realization of a comic and a film , by which they tell the story, was the integrating background that gave unity of purpose to the school work. …”

Giuseppe” con la cappella, “S. Antonio” con la Cappella, il “corso”, la strada principale verso la chiesa, e la Chiesa della Beata Vergine, la “Variante”, la “Pianura”, La “Villa Comunale”, un bellissimo parco al centro del paese, la “Fontanella”, un antico lavatoio, la “Vigna Chiesa”, “S. Domenico” un villaggio rurale.
Going around, the children discovered and photographed many typical and ancient streets and quarters of our old town centre: The “Fungalone” also named “Gonfalone”, the “Timpone”, “S. Giuseppe” with the chapel, “S . Antonio” with another chapel, the “Corso”, a main street towards the church, and the “Beata Vergine Church”, The “Variante”, The “Pianura”, the “Villa Comunale”, a very nice park in the middle of the town, the “ Fontanella”, an ancient fountain, “S. Domenico”, an outdoors rural village.

Dopo aver girovagato, a scuola, i bambini hanno inventato una filastrocca ed una favola ambientate nel centro storico con i nomi dei posti visitati.

After the going around, at school, the children invented a rhyme and a tale both setted in the old town centre with the names of the visited places.

IL MATRIMONIO DELLO SCOIATTOLO E DELLA FORMICA GIGANTE

Al "Fungalone", c'era una casa piccola e antica, con la porta col buco.
Una volta, da quel buco, sono usciti uno scoiattolo e una formica gigante.
Sono andati sul muretto e hanno osservato il panorama: il fiume, le montagne...
Il giorno dopo, lo scoiattolo e la formica sono andati a sposarsi nella chiesa "del Corso", la chiesa della beata Vergine Maria.
Lo sposo era lo scoiattolo e la sposa la formica gigante.
La sposa aveva un lungo vestito bianco e lo sposo uno smoking nero.
All'uscita dalla chiesa, hanno fatto il corteo per il "Corso", con tutti gli invitati che, precedentemente, avevano fatto tanti cuoricini alle porte delle case.
Noi ci siamo nascosti dietro le porte e abbiamo buttato il riso.
La sposa ha buttato il bouquet di fiori e lo ha afferrato uno scoiattolo, che è stato più veloce di un'altra formichina, cugina della sposa.
Sono andati tutti a festeggiare al ristorante vicino alla casa di Valentino.
Gli sposi hanno mangiato tanti antipasti e tante altre cose buone.
Infine è arrivata la torta, con sopra tante ciliegie, e hanno bevuto anche lo spumante.
Gli sposi sono andati a prendere il pullman nella "Variante", per andare in viaggio di nozze.
Sono andati in Cina.
Al ritorno, sono andati ad abitare in una casa piccola piccola, nella piazzetta di "San Giuseppe".
Dopo poco tempo, sono nati due gemelli: uno scoiattolino e una formichina.
E vissero felici e contenti.

And here’s the tale invented by the children:

THE MARRIAGE OF THE SQUIRREL AND THE GIANT ANT
At the "Fungalone" there was an ancient and small house with the hole in the door.
Once upon a time, from that hole, a squirrel and a giant ant went out.
They went on the little wall and looked at the view : the river, the mountains… .
The day after, the squirrel and the ant went and married to the church of the “Corso”,(main sreet) the”Beata Vergine Maria’s Church”.
The bridegroom was the squirrel and the bride was the giant ant.
The bride had a long white dress and the bridegroom a black dinner jacket.
At the exit of the church, they made a bridal procession through the “Corso” , with all the guests that, firstly, have made many little hearts on the house doors.
We hid behind the doors and threw the rice.
The bride threw the bunch of flowers and a squirrel, that was faster than another bride’s cousin little ant, grab it.
Everybody went and celebrated to the restaurant, near Valentine’s home.
The bride and bridegroom ate many starters and many other good things.
Finally the cake, with the cherries on it, arrived and they also drank a sparkling wine.
The bride and bridegroom went and caught the bus to the “Variante” (cross road), to go on the wedding journey.
They went to China.
At the come back, they went and lived in a very little house in the "S. Giuseppe" little square.
After a little time, two twin babies were born: a baby squirrel and a baby ant.
And they lived happily ever after.

On 10 July 2008 we had a concert for the end of the year. Our concert was loosely based on a history theme - the 1940's (World war 2) the 1950's (rock and roll) the 1960's (The Beatles) the 1970's (Saturday Night Fever, "YMCA") the 1980's (Live Aid, Michael Jackson's "Thriller") and the 1990's.
Il 10 Luglio 2008 abbiamo fatto un concerto per la fine dell'anno. Il nostro concerto si è unicamente basato su un tema storico - Gli anni '40 (Seconda guerra mondiale), gli anni '50 (Il Rock and Roll), gli anni '60 ( I beatles), gli anni '70( La febbre del sabato sera,"YMCA),gli anni '80 ( Live Aid, "Thriller" di Michael Jackson) e gli anni '90.

" Gocce... di memoria" / "Memory...drops"

"Gocce... di memoria" è il titolo della rappresentazione con la quale gli alunni della classe 5^B, guidati dalle insegnanti di classe Maria Concetta Ferrara, Mario Giuseppe Donadio e Maddalena Bellusci, hanno concluso, Venerdì 6 Giugno, l'anno scolastico. Si è trattato di un delizioso viaggio, scandito da scenette, canti e balli, attraverso la storia del nostro paese, che ha avuto come tema conduttore "l'acqua" e la sua importanza per Francavilla dalle origini fino ad oggi.

"Gocce... di memoria" is the title of the show with which the students of the class 5B, guided by the classes teachers Maria Concetta Ferrara, Mario Giuseppe Donadio and Maddalena Bellusci, concluded, on Friday 6th June, the school year.
It was a lovely journey, outlined by sketches, songs and ballets , through the history of our town, that had as a thread "The water" and its importance for Francavilla from the origins till nowadays.

"Poetando qua e là tra fantasia e realtà" è il titolo di una raccolta di componimenti e poesie presentata dagli alunni della classe 5^A per la fine dell'anno scolastico.Essa comprende lavori realizzati nell'arco dei cinque anni della scuola primaria sotto la guida attenta e premurosa della loro insegnante di Italiano Carmelina VItola.

"Poetando qua e là tra fantasia e realtà" is the title of a collection of compositions and poems the class 5 A pupils have presented for the end of the year. It includs works they made during the 5 years of the primary school under the the careful and solicitous guide of their teacher of Italian Carmelina Vitola.

In tale raccolta sono presenti, tra le molte poesie, anche quelle per le quali i "poeti in erba", come li definisce la loro insegnante, hanno vinto il secondo premio, l'anno scorso, ed il primo, quest'anno, ad un concorso di poesia indetto dalla Direzione Didattica di Lauria.

In this collection also there are, among the many poems, those ones for which "the budding poets", how their teacher calls them, won the second prize, last year, and thr first one, this year, in a poem competition announced by the Didactic Direction of Lauria.

The collection of poems was announced on Sunday 8th June with a ceremony organized by the class teachers, Vitola Carmelina, Di Giacomo Maria Rosaria e Capuano Palmina,that, together, have also taken care of the collection making.
